This is why you will never get anywhere.

It's clear to anyone with any nous that given a choice between keeping/gaining customers and sticking to corporate standards (set by fuck knows who, fuck knows when) which is more important.

The number of times I've had the conversation:
"NT4 is not supported here at Pre-Crap-Corp"
"This is shrink wrapped software we're building here, it doesn't just run at PCC"
"Well the users are just going to have to comply with our standards"
"You want us to dictate IT policy to the largest life insurance companies in Europe?"

and the modern version:
"Sorry, you cannot install Firefox. Our standard browser is IE6"
"But we're building a customer-facing website"
"Our standard browser is IE6"

Hmmmm I mainly work with Oracle, SQL Server and firebird... after a while their limitations begin to fuck you off in pretty much equal measure.

But on balance I'd probably go with Oracle as a preference if I could just stick with one!

Which is a shame, because I've got 8 or 10 years of DBA experience, but maybe that's the reason.

I have so much hatred for my current world that I've managed a couple hundred blogs in the past 2.5 years about it. Just imagine all the new hatred and bile I could come up with were I to leave software support and become a DBA.

but the software is a database and its contents. If anyone else is allowed to touch or come near said database, it's pure hell.

OTOH, when I only had to deal with the database as a database, that wasn't quite so bad. When I was dealing with a database because I also wrote the software client involved, I never had any problems.

I was, am and always will be a BOFH at heart. From my first industry job as a mainframe SYSOP (fuck I'm old!) to the $MegaCorp hack I am today. Do you think Oracle will ever release a DBA version or add-on module with features like auto-expiry of GRANT [permissions]? That would rock.
